FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If you did not find the answers you are looking for below, contact us and a local representative will be in touch shortly to help.

What can a Honomobo be used for?
A Honomobo is simply a living space. A Home, a rental suite, office, ADU, guest house, granny suite, in-law suite, cabin or cottage.

Is a Honomobo allowed on my land?
A Honomobo is built to be compliant with the local building code of the final address and is permanently affixed to a permanent foundation.

Our process is designed to assess the requirements locally and at the Provincial/State level and to develop drawing packages to submit for your local building permits

Can I customize my Honomobo?
Every Honomobo Home has a fixed layout with a set palette of interior and exterior styling options. This allows us to provide you with a predictable and transparent build process.

What is a Honomobo built with?
A Honomobo is built with an engineered steel frame and Corten Steel (container) siding that are precisely finished with high end materials and highly efficient systems.

How do I finance my Honomobo?
There are a number of ways to finance a Honomobo: Home Equity Line of Credit, Construction Mortgage, Refinance Plus improvements, Refinance, Purchase Plus Improvements. If you would like to discuss in more depth, we would be happy to refer you to lenders we have worked with in the past.

How long does it take to get a Honomobo?
From design through to permits and completion it typically takes 10-12 months. Permits vary by jurisdiction and can be as quick as 1 month or as long as 6+ months. The quicker you begin the pre-construction phase the sooner you can have your home! It typically only takes us 10-12 weeks to actually build your home.

Can I place a Honomobo over a conditioned living space?
We have changed our process slightly and are not going to be taking on projects in areas outside of Ontario, Canada with a site built conditioned main floor below the Honomobo unit (Living space). We can, however, design a site-built detached garage off to the side of the Honomobo or a garage under the Honomobo, as long as the space is unconditioned. The reason behind this is that when more than 50% of the project scope is reliant on local contractors/trades it is very challenging and unpredictable to execute the project. We want to complete amazing project experiences and cannot do this when such a large portion is reliant on 3rd parties outside of our control.

How is a Honomobo insulated?
Every Honomobo is built with efficiency in mind and built to meet and exceed your local requirements. Utilizing 2lb closed cell polyurethane spray foam insulation, we are able to achieve, as standard, an effective R24 in the walls, effective R38.9 in the ceiling and an optional in-floor insulation upgrade of an effective R24 that is recommended if your home is placed over a non-conditioned foundation.

What is the roof assembly? Will it support heavy snow loads?
The roof consists of wood joists, spray foam insulation, sheathing, 1% EPS slope package and a white PVC membrane with seams heat welded onsite during installation. Parapets are built up on the front and side of the roof with eavestrough and downspouts located at the back of the home.
As standard, the H-Series is rated for 180 psf snow load. If your local requirements are higher than this, we will provide a proposal to engineer the floor and roof system to accommodate.

If you build with used containers, are there dents or imperfections?
Yes, our MOBO and Honomobar are built with used shipping containers the containers may contain small dents or imperfections.

How is the corten steel siding finished?
The exterior Corten Steel siding is painted with a high-grade abrasion resistant and VOC compliant paint that is UV resistant and extremely durable.
Through continual R&D, we have chosen the highest quality paint to ensure that your home has the best chance to stand the test of time with minimal preventative maintenance.
How much does a Permit Cost?
Permit costs are determined by each local governing authority. Generally this information can be found on your local City's website.

What is the interior ceiling height?
The interior ceiling height is 9ft in both the H and M Series

How many Honomobo's have been built?
We have installed over 125 Honomobo's across North America
